At Florida State, Football Clouds Justice? Or Money, Power, Prestige Trumps Integrity

Excellent article in today’s NY Times.

At Florida State, Football Clouds Justice – NYTimes.com.

It’s  about tremendous power a school with a money making machine can wield.  I don’t think it has anything to do with football.  Here is what I wrote.

“It’s not about football. It’s about power and corruption in higher education. It’s pervasive.

It is going to be hard to stop.

Control of money, Power, Prestige. Control of what the public falsely believes is the key to the future (a degree, which is no longer an “education”, and thus, not the key it used to be).

All of these have forever, and will forever, attract scoundrels who will fight their way to the top.

These institutions, and individuals, must be held accountable. It may be too late, because it will take an educated electorate to understand the problem and get behind fixing it. It is not so easy to see what Thomas Jefferson saw: without education, democracy can’t succeed. (Nor can an economy thrive.)

This has become far worse than even this article indicates. For anyone interested in seeing just how far colleges will go to reach their goals – whatever they are – can read “A Tale Out of School”. It occurred at one of our so-called “elite” schools. It represents a pervasive attitude throughout education. It shows what type of people are in charge. It is on my blog inside-higher-ed .

As terrible as things are at football schools, this only the tip of the iceberg. #
