Colleges’ New Aid Target Sometimes is Just a Way to Make More “Profit”, Especially at Private Schools.

Colleges’ New Aid Target: the Middle Class – WSJ.

Here was my comment.

“Most private universities have only raised their published tuition. For over a decade, their net tuition has remained fairly constant.  Basically, they give a discount by calling it “financial aid”.  (I think economists call it discriminatory pricing, a way to maximize revenue and  profit.)

I have comments and links to two news articles (with data and graphs) on my blog www.inside-higher-ed.com .  Search for the post How the Government Exaggerates the Cost of College – NYTimes.com and New York Times Writes That Average Cost of College Steady Over a Decade .

Everyone needs to understand how these “non-profits” maximize their profits.  And I do mean profit; most are not in the education business, or the research business (though more are in that business than in the education business).  They are in the self-aggrandizement business, and that takes profit – which many make a lot of.”
