Costs Rising Quickly, Quality of Product Slumping – What Could This Mean?

I gave my view in a comment on this informative article ( http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304244904579276850992941142) in the Wall Street Journal today.

“So, over a few decades, costs have been going up dramatically, while quality of education has been going down. That should be a warning. The view from the inside (I am a professor.) is simple. This is what happens when you get to run a business (higher education) where (a) the consumer (once quaintly called the “student”) is, by definition, uneducated about the product, yet wants it badly; and (b) there is no oversight: and, (c) you (the college) are trusted to truthfully describe the product.

I could go on at great length about how most universities are run. (without many scruples.) The only thing that will improve education, while containing costs, is more public knowledge of how
things really work in universities. There are many books about the subject. Another place to start to learn (and probably be quite shocked, especially if you read “A Tale Out of School – A Case Study”) is my blog www.inside-higher-ed.com.”
