More On Holden Thorp

Interview: Jay Smith And Mary Willingham, Authors Of ‘Cheated’ : NPR.

I commented.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned what happened to Holden Thorp, the Chancellor of UNC.

First, though, here is a quote from Greg Easterbrook’s review of “Cheated” – a quote that, from my reading of the book, I agree with.

“…“The best-case analysis of Mr. Thorp is that he was hopelessly incompetent; explanations go downhill from there….”

Dr. Thorp left UNC and went to Washington University in St. Louis, where he is the Provost (Chief Academic Officer). In my opinion, that is something that people should sit up and notice. Here’s why.

I taught (math) at Wash. U. and, in my opinion, they are one of the best examples of how Presidents, Chancellors and many administrators “game” the system, whether it be football, or US News Rankings. Thus, Holden Thorp might just be their kind of guy.

If anyone thinks I might be talking without facts, there are plenty (including a documented story “A Tale Out of School”) on my blog inside-higher-ed

It’s time for people to realize it ain’t just football, folks; and it isn’t your grandmother’s education either. (Plenty of facts about that are on my blog, too.) This has to be exposed and changed, or our country is in big trouble.”
