NY Times Notes “Steep Slide in Law School Enrollment”, But Misses Big Factor

A Steep Slide in Law School Enrollment Accelerates – NYTimes.com.

“I pointed out the factor with this comment.

Why isn’t anyone addressing the “elephant in the room”? Surely, its recognition by potential law students and their parents has an effect on attendance.

And what is the elephant?

Scott Turow has called legal education an “unscrupulous racket”.

Turow’s complete quote can be found on the cover of “The Lawyer Bubble” by Steven J. Harper. That book describes, in shocking detail, the unethical steps some law schools have taken over the years to attract more, and higher paying, students.

Of course, most law schools are not an island to themselves. They exist in a university environment. They are reflective of a whole university culture. That, in itself, is a dismal story. (For anyone who is interested in that story, see inside-higher-ed , a revealing blog written by a former professor, me.)”
