On Metadata, Privacy and Opposition

Warning:  This is not about education and I may not actually know what I’m talking about.:)

It surprises me that people who feel that they don’t have anything to hide trust the government to collect Internet data.  I claim that it could well be against their interest for the government to collect Internet data.  For a simple example, say that they object to a government policy.  They don’t do anything about it.  But I do.  I’m active against that policy and political leaders know that from my political speech.  Now, without even following me, those politicians may be able to get access to who my colleagues are.  This certainly will have an effect on my freedom of speech and assembly, and, indirectly, on the person who “has nothing to hide” but wishes I would convinve people that my (and their) view is correct.
