Good Essay in Today’s Times: “Your Waitress, Your Professor”

I recommend this.

Your Waitress, Your Professor – NYTimes.com.

In addition to being a good essay, this op-ed, when combined with some outside facts, makes another point.

“By looking at one of the English Comp courses that Ms. Brandon teaches one can get a scary glimpse into today’s college scene – a scene where too many students have too much time on their hand to get into trouble; and, where inexpensive adjuncts can be used to teach since there isn’t much to teach, and there isn’t much depth to what is taught. (None of this, of course, is Ms. Brandon’s doing.)

Here is what English Comp 102 (which requires a 30-36 ACT to place into) requires in terms of reading and writing.

447 pages of reading about how to write. That equates to about 30 pages a week, or an hour of reading, IF the student does all the reading.

54 pages of essays; about 4 per week.

The writing requirement is four essays for a total of 5,000-7,250 words for the semester.

(All of this can be found on UNLV’s English Comp website.)

As a former professor, I can almost guarantee that UNLV could care less that Ms. Brandon can write so well herself. Like most colleges, they probably could care less about education; otherwise, they would utilize her skills in a much more effective way – and the students would get a good education, and could look forward to a bright future. But, then, that wouldn’t be very cost effective would it? And who cares anyway?”
