For an old fashioned explanation, recall that Jefferson said that no end of nobles will steal all the people’s money in a democracy with an uneducated citizenry. I write this now because I am in the process of preparing comments on Pres. Obama’s new college rating system and I have some worries that Prof. Jacobs’ has hit the nail on the head.
If we end up with highly skilled workers, living in a democracy, but without the ability to discern what they are voting for, where will we (and they) be?
