A Look at Stats on College Costs and Aid – WSJ.

I’m providing this link for readers.  (I also added a comment.)

“Expectations are usually based on past experience. In this case they shouldn’t be.

In most parents’ college experience- around 1980 – a college degree required about 20 hours of study per week. Now it requires around 13, much of it done in groups – a not very effective way for students to do the majority of their studying. (See “Academically Adrift” by Arun and Roksa for the detailed numbers.)

It doesn’t require a math degree to figure out that today’s students don’t get the same education, nor should they expect the same future. (Of course, not always, but in most cases.)

I didn’t need to read Arum and Roksa. I am a former math professor. I have seen it happening – up close and very personal. (See my blog for the details.)

Parents and students alike – buyer beware”.
