A Good Suggestion (With Changes) From Retired Chancellor of NY Schools

A Lesson Plan for A+ Teachers – WSJ – WSJ.

Here is my comment.

Since I am a former professor who has seen the sorry, scandolous, and corrupt, state of higher education for over three decades, I could strongly support Mr. Klein’s suggestion that “…prospective teachers…demonstrate real subject-matter knowledge…”, if there were a couple of changes.

Here is my changed version.

No COLLEGE be allowed to graduate a prospective teacher, without demonstrating that the teacher received real subject-matter knowledge from that college.

My suggestion for doing that – in a way that would be acceptable to teachers unions – is for teachers to be required to take competency tests. The results should be published by college, not by teacher. (If a college graduats someone who is incompetent in their subject, it is not the graduates fault.)
